Press Release
Join hands to Defeat Neo-Liberal Assault on Education
Oppose New Education Policy
Campus Front of India launches Nation wide Protest

Last month during the current session of the parliament the Central government has announced to setup a new panel for Higher Education. It was announced by Mr. Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for HRD as ‘National Commission for Higher Education and Research Bill, 2010. It is the neo-liberal assault on Indian Education System.

The nature of the Commission is against the federal principle of our nation. As per the Commission, all of the Higher Education system will be come under one umbrella. The centre will only be the deciding authority. No State governments can interfere into the power of the centre.

Already, the higher education was in the State List. But, after emergency, it was shifted to the Concurrent List. Even the education is in the Concurrent List, the State governments can be mere the silent spectators. They can’t do anything after a certain limit. If any student is affected by the private institutes in the level of higher education, in their States, in which attracts immediate action, nothing can be done by the respective States.

Also, the announcement of Mr. Kapil Sibal in the new education policy, ‘A single National-Level Entrance Test’ for students to get admission into engineering, medical, economics and commerce courses can’t be digested.

Because, we can see the entrance tests have been abolished in the State of Tamilnadu, which was overwhelm received by students and parents. This would relieve the students from the extra burden and stress of exam preparation.

Campus Front of India also submitted its demand in the National Students Convention at New Delhi last year, that all State governments to abolish entrance tests for admissions in their respective States and the Central government to reduce its weight age to 50% in central universities and institutions.

Campus Front of India feels that the new education policy is the assault on Indian education system by the neo-liberal interests of the ruling class. We feel that setting up NCHER is nothing but the tactics of the Centre to shift the education from the Concurrent List to Union List. If it happens, the federal principle will go to burial ground slowly. Decentralization is the good way for the development. But NCHER should pave the path of centralization of power at a single point.

Inviting foreign universities with red carpet will further increase the commercialization of education. Foreign universities are not coming to provide free educational service for the rural back round and poor students. They are bringing the education as a commodity for sale. We should be aware of it.

We demand for radical changes in education, in favour of downtrodden sections of society, who is witnessing the majority of the nation.

Campus Front of India is launched a nation wide campaign from 2010 March 10 to 25, to expose the neo-liberal agenda behind these educational reforms. Posters, pamphlets, rallies and protests should be the part of the campaign. Campus Front of India calls upon the student community to join the struggle for conserving the welfare nature of Indian education system, to defeat the neo-liberal assault on education, to annihilate commercialization of education and to ensure the federal nature of our nation

Sincerely
